Hackathon Demo Day Highlights #BuildTogether

At DOTC (Digital Ops-Tech Centre), we believe that creativity is an endless resource—one that only grows stronger when we come together and put it into action. This philosophy was at the heart of our inaugural Hackathon 2024, and it culminated in a vibrant Demo Day, where teams showcased their functional prototypes to an audience of agencies and professionals from across the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) and the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF).
The event was a remarkable display of collaboration, where innovative ideas sparked off one another and developers, users, and stakeholders united in a shared desire to solve complex, meaningful problems. The excitement in the air was palpable as the various teams presented their solutions, and it became clear that when the right minds come together, technology can be crafted to make a real impact.
Collaboration Breeds Innovation
This year’s Hackathon brought together developers, users, and experts from various branches of SAF, each bringing their unique experiences and expertise to the table. The event aimed to address specific challenges faced by SAF, and it was the collaboration between developers and users that allowed for solutions to take shape. What emerged was a blend of creativity, technical skill, and practical insight into how we can better support the needs of those serving in the SAF.
As one team member shared, “The best solutions come from working closely with the users who understand the problem firsthand. When developers and users collaborate, it’s easier to translate those challenges into actionable, innovative solutions.” This spirit of cooperation and open dialogue was the true essence of the Hackathon, reinforcing the value of real-world input in the development of cutting-edge tech.

A Day of Inspiration and Innovation
The Demo Day was a day where ideas were not just presented, but celebrated. Teams took the stage and demonstrated how their prototypes could solve real-world challenges, from improving communication management with Telepost to enhancing workflow tracking with Sprout. Other solutions like Freqy and Wavecatcher were designed to streamline radio frequency management, while iVADER provided a tool to assess operator fatigue and Sentiments offered a platform for quick insights and feedback.
These prototypes exemplified the creativity that emerged when diverse minds came together to address meaningful issues within the SAF and MINDEF. From addressing operational efficiency to enhancing the well-being of SAF personnel, the solutions created during the Hackathon have the potential to transform how we operate and collaborate.

Forging Stronger Connections
What stood out throughout the Hackathon was the level of engagement and the genuine interest in solving problems together. It wasn’t just about building tech—it was about building relationships. Trust and communication formed the foundation of these solutions, and the bonds forged between developers, users, and stakeholders throughout the process are invaluable. As one participant noted, “When you have sincere, open conversations, the best ideas emerge. We’re all working toward the same goal: improving SAF operations.”
As we continue to work on refining and implementing these solutions, we look forward to the next steps in our journey. The collaboration doesn’t stop with the Hackathon; it’s a continuous process of iteration and improvement. Together, we will ensure that these solutions truly meet the needs of our users and make a lasting impact on the SAF and the wider defense community.

Looking Forward
The Hackathon has been an incredible success, and we extend our deepest thanks to everyone who contributed to making it happen. Special thanks to the teams from the RSN, Army, RSAF, and DIS for their invaluable input, and to our Chief of DIS, Yi-Jin Lee, and MINDEF Deputy Secretary (Admin) Mrs. Elaine Ng for joining us on Demo Day. Your presence and support mean a lot.
The journey doesn’t end here. With the insights gained and the solutions developed, we’re now better equipped to continue refining and expanding these ideas in collaboration with our users. For those interested in exploring these solutions further or participating in future Hackathons, we invite you to connect with us.
